Alicia, a mother of five, struggled with substance use from a young age. After her third child was born, she was referred to Kansas Children’s Service League (KCSL). Read Alicia’s story in her own words to learn how KCSL helped her family stay together.
I’ve struggled with meth addiction since I was nineteen. At first, I thought I was in control. I was able to stop using when I was pregnant with my first two children, but when it came to my third and fourth pregnancies, I was no longer in control. I was so angry and frustrated with myself because I couldn’t stop using, but I didn’t know what to do. I needed help, but at the same time, I was scared to admit that.
Taking the First Step
My third and fourth babies tested positive at birth and, as a result, the Department for Children and Families (DCF) was involved. I was referred to KCSL for the Parent-Child Assistance Program (P-CAP). It still took quite a while for me to admit I needed help. I was afraid my kids would get taken away, but I knew I needed to do something.
When I finally opened up about my addiction, KCSL did everything they could to help me. They helped me find a rehabilitation center where I could bring my children with me. While I was working with KCSL, my children’s father was also struggling with addiction and was in and out of jail. He realized he needed help as well, and together, we decided we were going to get sober for our family.
A New Path Forward
After treatment, KCSL was still there for us and helped change our environment. They helped us get better housing and connected us with all kinds of resources to help us get back on our feet.
I got pregnant again, and this was my first baby with absolutely no substance use. Now, my children’s father has been sober for two years, and I am almost two years sober. We feel like much better parents now. Our children are doing great, and we are much more involved and connected with them now as parents. We’re so grateful for KCSL’s patience, understanding and support. They were at our side through all of this without judgment and helped us so much.
Thank you, KCSL, for helping us keep our family together.
