Bullying Prevention Facts
yellow
School Violence: In two-thirds of the 37 school shoots since 1974, the attackers felt persecuted, bullied, threatened, attached or injured.

Prevalence: Seventy-four percent (74%) of eight to 11 year-olds said teasing and bullying occur at their school – more than the incidence of smoking, drinking, drugs, or sex. The rate increased to 86% among children aged 12 to 15 years-old. A recent study indicates that 5,736,417 students are involved in bullying – as a bully, target, or both.

Suicides: Between 1980 and 1997 the rate of suicides increased 109% for 10 to 14 year-olds. Among 15 to 19 year-olds, 62% of the increase in the total number of suicides from this same period was due to the increase in firearm related suicides.

Truancy: An estimated 160,000 children stay home from school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students.

Crime: One in four children identified as bullies by their third grade peers had a criminal record by the time they reached the age of 29.

Teacher Issues: Every day 6,250 teachers are threatened with bodily injury and 260 are physically assaulted.
