Crisis Nursery
Where do you turn when you are experiencing a crisis and need care for your child?

In Wichita, KCSL offers Crisis Nursery, short-term care services for children when parents are experiencing a crisis or extreme stress. Crisis Nursery can assist your family with emergency childcare when unexpected situations occur including parental or sibling illness or death; lack of utilities, food or shelter; domestic violence; the need for drug alcohol treatment; or other emergency situations which jeopardize the safety and well-being of the child.

Crisis Nursery services include meaningful involvement of parents in the planning and evaluation of our activities. Parents are involved in decision-making by receiving services on a voluntary basis. Working directly with the parent, a KCSL professional helps identify your family’s needs, determines the best resources and makes a plan to meet these goals.

Temporary care services for children are available Monday through Friday and include:
  • Nutritious food.
  • Nurturance, consistency and a stimulating daily routine.
  • Developmentally appropriate children’s programming.
  • Advocacy, resources, and referrals to help resolve emergencies or crisis.
Crisis Nursery also extends services to the parents:
  • Training
  • Support
  • Connection to community resources
  • Parent support groups
All services offered by Crisis Nursery are free and based on availability. There is no charge to the family. To initiate Crisis Nursery services in Wichita, please call KCSL at 316-942-4261 ext. 1312 or 1-800-CHILDREN to see if you qualify.

KCSL coordinates the Wichita Coalition for Child Abuse Prevention (CCAP), formerly known as the Wichita Child Abuse Fatalities Community Response Team. CCAP formed to implement prevention initiatives as a community response to the cluster of eight child abuse fatalities in 2008 and prevent fewer future deaths with funding from KCSL’s Statewide Community Based Child Abuse Prevention grant dollars. The mission of CCAP is to empower organizations in Wichita to create effective systems to prevent child abuse and neglect. Work groups formed to develop strategies related to the attributes identified in data received by Wichita Police Department.

Through the efforts of dedicated individuals, community based organizations, public agencies and other community leaders, the Crisis Nursery Work Group was established to review child maltreatment prevention strategies implemented in other states. CCAP identified a community Crisis Nursery as a priority program needed to prevent Wichita children from being abused. The first step in preventing abuse is separating the child from the caregiver by providing a temporary, safe place to stay. The second step is to help the parent increase protective factors.

In October 2013, Kansas’ first Crisis Nursery opened in Wichita to support families in crisis and connect them to needed resources. The main purpose of the Wichita Crisis Nursery is to provide a safe environment for children when families are in need, thereby preventing child abuse and neglect.
