Types of Foster Care
Just like the children needing care, there are a variety of foster care opportunities families can choose to provide.

  • Family Resource Homes (regular foster care): Licensed homes that provide foster care for children and youth who are unable to live at home.

  • Resource Home Respite Care: The provision of respite coverage for other resource families. This may be for partial days or overnight help in situations when the resource family may need time away.

  • Therapeutic Foster Care:Therapeutic foster care is designed to provide individualized family-based treatment to children and youth with serious emotional and behavioral disorders. This placement is for those at risk of failure or who have failed in a regular foster home, OR at risk of placement into a structured residential setting. It may also serve those who are ready to transition from a more restrictive environment but may need further treatment.

  • Professional Resource Family Care:This care is intended for provide short-term and intensive resources for the child and his/her family. The intent of the service is to provide a crisis stabilization option for the family in order to avoid psychiatric inpatient and institutional treatment of the child. These resource parents work in partnership with the biological parents who voluntarily place their children in care.

  • Supported Family Living (SFL): Supported Family Living (SFL) Foster Care is a service available to eligible mentally retarded or developmentally disabled children, ages 5 through 21 who cannot remain with their families in order to avoid placement in institutional or other congregate residential setting.
