When parents gain the support and tools they need to thrive, the effect ripples through their families and communities. Laynie, a mother of five young children, is a shining example of how determination and guidance can turn challenges into opportunities. With help from Kansas Children’s Service League’s (KCSL) early childhood home visitation program, Laynie improved her family’s circumstances and built a business that brings joy and comfort to others.

From Hobby to Heartfelt Business

Enrolled in KCSL’s program since December 2022, Laynie has worked hard to achieve goals for her family while pursuing her aspirations. After initially taking up crocheting to unwind at the end of her busy days, she discovered an unexpected opportunity when the owner of a sensory site requested crocheted sensory tools for children. Embracing the chance to combine her creativity with her understanding of sensory play—especially as a parent of a neurodivergent child—she launched Ivy Threads. Her business specializes in crafting sensory tools for people of all ages including weighted crocheted animals.

“I am extremely grateful for what my business has turned into and how it has affected people,” Laynie said.

Building a Foundation for Success

Laynie’s entrepreneurial journey was made possible through KCSL’s support. She worked closely with a family support specialist to identify priorities and make meaningful progress toward them. With KCSL’s guidance, Laynie has strengthened her parenting skills, found consistent daycare providers, secured a larger home and enhanced her budgeting abilities. This foundation allowed her to create a stable and supportive environment for her family and turn her creativity into a business that helps others. Laynie’s journey is an inspiring reminder that challenges can lead to new opportunities for success.
