In September 2021, Victoria reached out to Kansas Children’s Service League (KCSL) for help, enrolling in our early childhood home visitation program for new parents. As a brand-new mother to her 1-month old son, Jabree, she felt overwhelmed and unsure how to care for her baby. Her family support specialist immediately began working with her to provide guidance and support.

Victoria set personal goals to be active with Jabree, foster a strong bond and provide the stability she lacked during her childhood. She also aimed to secure stable employment with insurance and obtain a driver’s license and car. With the support of KCSL, she achieved these goals, and things began to look up for her and Jabree.

Seeking a Safe Environment

However, a few years later, Victoria’s circumstances changed dramatically. She and Jabree became unhoused, and Victoria struggled to find shelter and maintain employment. One night before Thanksgiving, they slept in their car before finding refuge in a shelter. Despite these hardships, Victoria remained determined to keep her son safe.

Victoria’s mental health suffered due to the immense stress, but her family support specialist continued to provide unwavering support through visits, text messages and essential resources like diapers and wipes. Most importantly, her specialist emphasized the positives in Victoria’s efforts, boosting her morale during these challenging times. Victoria stayed in the shelter for several months and diligently worked towards her goals. She enrolled Jabree in daycare and prepared to complete the shelter’s program.

Starting a New Chapter

This spring, the KCSL home visiting team celebrated a significant milestone: Victoria was moving into her own home. With only her clothes and her child, Victoria was excited about this new chapter. Her family support specialist worked tirelessly to provide her with essential items for her new home including a housewarming gift with cleaning supplies and kitchen items. Victoria is now living in her apartment with Jabree and is working towards certification for more stable employment through workforce programs.

Resilience Through Adversity

Recently, Victoria was invited to speak at a local youth and church group retreat, where she bravely shared her story of overcoming homelessness to inspire others that it’s possible to rise above adverse challenges. Victoria is an exceptional mom and has worked incredibly hard to achieve her goals through difficult times. She has set a positive example for her child through love, resilience, hard work and determination. We couldn’t be prouder of her!
